Chattenden Prison, Chattenden, Kent
In 1872, an army barracks and training camp was opened on Chattenden Lane, Chattenden, Kent. In 1875, an ordnance deport was added to the site for the storage of large amounts of gunpowder.
Beteen 1876-7, a small convict prison also operated at the site, which was effectively a satellite branch of the convict prison at Chatham. It had cells for 100 prisoners, all men, with no more than a year to serve. They were occupied in making powder magazines for the War Department. The staff consisted of a principal warder and twelve subordinate officers.
The prison was closed in 1886. The Chattenden site was later occupied by the Royal School of Military Engineering. The School relocated in 1993 and the buildings were demolished in 2005.
