Borough Bridewell, Leicester, Leicestershire
A Town Bridewell, or House of Correction, was in existence by 1776 and adjoined the Town Gaol on Highcross (or High Cross) Street, Leicester.
In October 1777, prison reformer John Howard visited the establishment, which he described as having two small rooms for men, and two for women.
Both the the bridewell and gaol were reconstructed in 1792. In 1830, both were relocated a short distance up Highcross Street to the premises previously occupied by the County Gaol and the adjacent County House of Correction.
In 1837, the bridewell and gaol were formally merged. Further information on the bridewell after 1830 is provided on the page on the town gaol.
